The CircusWorks Conference
Three days of talks, forums, workshops and info sessions with top international circademics and youth circus professionals.
This years’ conference will be a landmark event for UK youth circus. Here’s some of the exciting programme we have planned:
- Multiplier event for ASK- Assistant Trainers Sharing Knowledge- presenting a curriculum and guidebook for teaching assistant trainers.
- Launching the ACE funded CircusWorks Survey 2018/19
- Launch of Extraordinary Bodies’ ‘Circus for Everybody Trainers Toolkit’
- Presentation of groundbreaking research from Canada on the benefits of circus training for young people and Physical Literacy
- Training by Dean Kriellaars in the use of PLAY tools to measure Physical Literacy in young people
- Meet people from European Networks, Caravan and EYCO
Look who’s Coming!
He supervises the Human Performance Lab at the University of Manitoba which is devoted to research on physical literacy. He is a scientist of the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba, and an associate of the Spinal Cord Research Centre in Winnipeg. He is the Scientific Director of the Centre for Circus Arts Research, Innovation and Knowledge Transfer (CRITAC) at the Ecole Nationale de Cirque in Montreal, Canada. He is the recipient of numerous awards for building community wellness through service to community, as well as major awards for teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level. He is the original designer or contributor for many tools for assessing physical literacy.

Lina Johannson- As Joint Artistic Director of Mimbre, Lina leads on the company’s vision and artistic programme, including Mimbre’s programme for local young people. Lina also works on collaborations and external projects with other theatre companies, venues and creatives, as director, specialist choreographer and movement director. She is driven by the wish to use circus and physicality not only for thrill and spectacle, but also in subtle ways to represent human relationships, create an atmosphere, tell a narrative or reveal a character.
Steven Desanghere is fast becoming to go-to person for group facilitation among social and youth circusprojects in Europe. He works with emergent agendas, and ensures all participants feel heard, included and involved. He has been a facilitator for ASK- Assistant Trainers Sharing Knowledge- Erasmus funded project creating a new curriculum and guidebook for teaching assistant trainers. Steven is also an expert in social circus, and will facilitate discussions on the role of circus skills as a tool for social engagemen. He is the author of “Look at Me, The Circus Approach: working with children and young people through the circus arts”
Petra Päivärinne, from Finland, is an art educator and teacher and works in field of circus, theatre and live art. She is a facilitator for the ASK project
Since 2014 she has been working as head of education, trainer’s trainer and facilitator at the Finnish Youth Circus Association. She designs, coordinates, hosts and facilitates events, workshops and training programs for FYCA circus teachers, assistant trainers, members and associates. She is head teacher of FYCA pedagogical circus instructor training and teaches art education, performance studies, circus art and history, group management and leadership. Petra has been a key person in the ASK- assistant trainer curriculum development
Peter Duncan is a trainer based in Cheshire, who designs and delivers training that makes a real change across the UK.
His reputation is for innovative, high energy training that changes people’s practice.
He uses knowledge and experience from a range of fields to create bespoke workshops, courses and events
